Udupi: A second-year pre-university (PU) student from Balkattu in Hirebettu village allegedly died by suicide, reportedly following emotional distress after a family interaction related to her studies. The incident has cast a pall of gloom over the locality and once again drawn attention to the mental health challenges faced by students.

The deceased has been identified as Samanvi, a resident of Balkattu, who was pursuing her II PUC. According to sources, she was preparing for her upcoming examinations and was at home with her family at the time of the incident.

Events leading up to the incident

Police sources said that on the evening of December 26, Samanvi’s mother noticed her using a mobile phone instead of studying and advised her to focus on her academic preparation. The advice, family members reportedly stated, was given in a corrective and concerned manner, keeping in mind the importance of the forthcoming examinations.

However, it is alleged that Samanvi became emotionally upset following the interaction. Shortly thereafter, she attempted to end her life inside her bedroom.

Family members noticed the situation immediately and acted without delay. She was rushed to Manipal Hospital for emergency medical treatment.

Hospitalisation and death

Doctors at Manipal Hospital made efforts to save the student, who was admitted in a critical condition. Despite sustained medical care, Samanvi succumbed to her injuries while undergoing treatment, hospital sources said.

The news of her death has left her family members devastated and has shocked residents of Balkattu and neighbouring areas, many of whom described her as a quiet and young student with her whole life ahead of her.

Police case and investigation

Following the incident, Manipal police registered a case and have taken up further investigation. Police officials said statements from family members and others are being recorded to understand the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.

Preliminary inquiry suggests there was no external pressure or foul play involved, though officials said all aspects would be examined as part of the investigation. The police have also completed procedural formalities related to the case.

Concern over student stress

The incident has once again raised concerns about the pressure and emotional stress faced by students, particularly during examination periods. Educationists and counsellors have repeatedly stressed the need for open communication between parents and children, and for recognising early signs of emotional distress.

Experts say that while parental guidance is important, adolescents may sometimes internalise stress more deeply than expected. They have urged families and educational institutions to create supportive environments where students feel comfortable expressing their anxieties and fears.

Local residents and community members said there is a growing need for awareness programmes on mental health, especially in rural areas, to help families better understand how to support young people during academically demanding phases.

Appeal for awareness and support

Authorities and mental health professionals have emphasised that emotional distress among students should never be ignored. They have called for greater access to counselling services in schools and colleges, as well as helplines that students can reach out to in times of crisis.

Conclusion: The death of the young II PUC student in Udupi is a tragic reminder of the emotional vulnerability of adolescents and the importance of mental health awareness. As investigations continue, the incident underscores the need for compassion, communication and timely support for students facing stress and anxiety.
