Udupi [Karnataka]: After years of delays and public demand, the Indrali railway vehicular bridge on NH 169A was inaugurated on Sunday by Union Minister of State for Railways, V Somanna. The new bridge, connecting Udupi and Manipal, is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and enhance road safety in the region.
The inauguration ceremony featured a ribbon-cutting and lighting of the ceremonial lamp by dignitaries including MP Kota Srinivas Poojary and MLA Yashpal Suvarna. Several local officials, former ministers, and residents attended the event, marking the completion of a long-awaited infrastructure project.
Government focus on infrastructure
Speaking at the event, Somanna emphasised the government’s commitment to infrastructure development in coastal Karnataka, highlighting the doubling of the national highway network from 5,000 km to 10,000 km. He also announced plans to rename Indrali railway station as Sri Krishna railway station, a move supported by several local leaders.
MP Poojary recalled the project’s prolonged journey, noting that FIRs had to be filed against officials to ensure timely completion. He described the inauguration as a historic milestone after multiple protests and delays. MLA Suvarna also praised the project and reaffirmed his support for the station renaming initiative.
Construction and technical details
The bridge’s construction, initiated in 2018 with a budget of Rs 14 crore, included pedestrian passages and protective side walls with anti-rust coating. A significant milestone was the April 2025 installation of a 58-meter steel girder weighing around 450 tons, a complex operation carried out using hydraulic jacks and rollers.
The bridge’s completion is expected to ease traffic congestion, improve safety at the previous level crossing, and provide better connectivity for students, residents, and daily commuters. The inauguration also featured a cultural performance of Vande Mataram by Sujala Sathish Suvarana.
Public reaction and significance
Local residents and commuters, who had faced repeated delays and inconveniences due to the previous traffic bottleneck, welcomed the bridge. The project is seen as a key development in Udupi’s urban planning, ensuring smoother movement of vehicles and safer travel conditions.
Conclusion
The inauguration of the Indrali railway bridge represents a major infrastructure achievement for coastal Karnataka, reflecting persistent public demand, government initiative, and engineering expertise. It is expected to enhance connectivity, commuter safety, and regional development for years to come.
