Udupi: The approach road to Indrali railway station remains a serious safety threat more than three years after a landslide damaged the route. Despite repeated complaints, no lasting repair work has been carried out, leaving pedestrians and drivers at constant risk.
The edge of the road, eroded by the slide, is now hidden under thick grass, creating an illusion of stable ground. “Many people don’t realize there’s a drop and end up dangerously close to the edge,” said a shopkeeper who travels the road daily.
On the opposite side, a stream flows dangerously close, especially during the monsoon. Torrents of rainwater from higher ground flood the road, making it slick and treacherous. The water runoff accelerates erosion, further destabilizing the already fragile path.
Residents have expressed frustration over the absence of even basic safety precautions like sidewalls or warning signs. “We’ve raised this concern repeatedly, but officials haven’t taken any real action,” said a local resident.
The road is frequently used by school children, office-goers, and residents, heightening concerns. Locals warn that a tragedy is only a matter of time if corrective steps are not taken.
Despite written appeals to the railway department and civic authorities, the issue remains unresolved. Citizens are now calling on the district administration to intervene urgently. Their demands include constructing a protective sidewall, placing cautionary signage, and fixing the drainage system to safeguard commuters.
