Karkala: Karkala police have arrested Soumya Shetty, wife of businessman Sudeep Shetty, on charges of allegedly abetting his suicide. Following her arrest on April 11, she was produced before a court, which remanded her to 14 days of judicial custody.

The case pertains to the death of Sudeep Shetty, who died by suicide at his residence in Karkala on March 22. His family had subsequently lodged a complaint accusing Soumya of driving him to take the extreme step.

Marriage and early developments

According to the complaint filed by Sudeep’s father, B Damodara (62), Sudeep had married Soumya on February 17, 2026, at the Puttur sub-registrar’s office. Soumya is a resident of Kukkundoor Himmuje Kaje.

After their marriage, the couple began living together at Banglegudde Kaje in Joduraste, in Karkala taluk. However, within a short period, tensions reportedly emerged in their relationship.

Allegations of harassment and threats

The complaint details an incident on March 17, when Sudeep was travelling with his mother to attend a pooja function. It is alleged that Soumya intercepted their car on her scooter near Nelyadi town.

During this encounter, she is said to have verbally abused both Sudeep and his mother and allegedly issued threats to kill him. The family claims that such incidents contributed to growing distress in Sudeep’s personal life.

Hospitalisation and death

On March 22, Soumya reportedly contacted relatives to inform them that Sudeep had consumed a poisonous substance. He was initially admitted to Nitte Gajria Hospital before being shifted to Adarsha Hospital, and later to Yenepoya Hospital for advanced medical treatment.

Despite efforts by doctors, Sudeep succumbed to his condition at approximately 3:09 am on March 29.

Case transferred and arrest made

Following a preliminary inquiry, the Superintendent of Police, Udupi district, ordered the transfer of the case on April 1 to the in-charge inspector of Karkala Town Police Station, Manjappa D R, for further investigation.

Based on evidence collected during the probe, police proceeded with the arrest of Soumya Shetty on April 11. Investigators have cited allegations of continuous mental harassment as a key factor leading to the case being registered.

Investigation ongoing

Police officials stated that the investigation is still underway and additional evidence is being examined. Statements from family members and other relevant witnesses are being recorded as part of the process.
