Udupi: In the sacred town of Udupi, known as Rajata Peetha, preparations are underway for the Kattige Muhurta—a revered firewood collection ritual that plays a vital role in the spiritual and culinary offerings at Krishna Math. The ritual, scheduled for 9:15 am on July 13, was announced by Uday Saralathaya, Diwan of Shiroor Math, at a press meet on July 11.
Part of the upcoming Paryaya of 2026–2028, this is the third major muhurta following the Akki Muhurta, during which rice was collected for Annadana (mass feeding). Firewood is traditionally used to cook food for the deity, and the prasada made from this firewood is considered deeply sanctified, believed to bring peace and divine grace to devotees.
Devotees believe that Sri Madhvacharya himself offers this naivedya to Lord Krishna. The firewood, collected during Ashada month, is artistically stacked into a 50-foot chariot-shaped structure near Madhva Sarovara using Karimaram branches, symbolizing spiritual energy and continuity.
The rituals begin at 7:30 am with Vedic chanting, Navagraha puja, and musical processions featuring traditional instruments. Firewood is carried from Lakshmi Garden in Kalsanka to the temple premises, with offerings and prayers at several holy shrines.
It’s believed that participating in this ritual removes fire-related doshas, enhances digestion, and invites divine blessings. Organizers urge devotees to attend in large numbers.
MLA Yashpal Suvarna also shared that Udupi Municipality will illuminate the city from Jan 14–24 for the upcoming Paryaya festivities.
Present at the press meet were Mohan Bhat, Nandan Jain, Vasudeva Acharya, among others.
