Udupi: Ahead of Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and idol immersion processions across Udupi district, Deputy Commissioner Swaroop T. K. has issued an order imposing a ban on the sale of liquor at designated times to ensure law and order.

Immersion processions across district

Ganesh idol immersion will be held at several locations in Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala sub-divisions from August 27. The Deputy Commissioner has cited the potential for disturbances arising from alcohol consumption during large public gatherings as the reason for this precautionary measure.

Ban timings and areas covered

According to the order:

  • The sale of liquor in bars, restaurants and wine shops with licences has been banned on August 27 from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 midnight across Udupi district.

  • Within Udupi city limits, additional restrictions will be in place on August 29 and August 31 from 2:00 p.m. to 12:00 midnight to coincide with immersion processions on those dates.

  • The prohibition applies to all outlets licensed to sell alcohol, including CL-2, CL-4 and CL-7 category establishments.

    Objective: maintaining public order

Officials said the move aims to maintain peace during the festival, which attracts large crowds and involves elaborate processions. Authorities have also directed police to intensify patrolling, particularly near immersion points and procession routes, to ensure smooth conduct of festivities.

    Community urged to cooperate

The district administration has appealed to residents, business owners and festival organisers to extend their cooperation. “Public participation and adherence to the guidelines will help ensure a peaceful and joyful celebration,” an official statement read.

    Conclusion

With the liquor ban and tightened security measures in place, authorities are hopeful that Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations and idol immersion processions across Udupi district will be conducted in a safe and harmonious manner.
