In an effort to curb the spread of infectious diseases such as dengue, malaria, and chicken pox during the monsoon season, the Udupi City Municipal Council (CMC) has implemented stringent measures, including a ban on plastic usage within its jurisdiction.
Recent initiatives by the Municipal Council have resulted in significant enforcement actions. Nine shops were fined a total of Rs 8,300 for violations related to cleanliness, based on surveys conducted in the area. Furthermore, inspections of 17 shop fronts led to fines amounting to Rs 46,500 for the use of prohibited plastic materials.
Despite prior warnings issued by the municipal council, some shop owners have continued to disregard regulations by maintaining unhygienic conditions and using banned plastic products. In response, the municipal commissioner has issued a stern warning, stating that failure to comply may result in the revocation of their business licenses.
This proactive approach aims not only to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards but also to prevent the breeding of disease-carrying vectors commonly associated with the rainy season. By enforcing the ban on plastic, the council seeks to mitigate environmental impact and promote sustainable practices within the community.
