Udupi – For the first time in Pangla parish history, the ‘Gadyant Khell’, a traditional sports day held in a muddy paddy field, brought together generations of parishioners for a day of laughter, learning, and legacy. Conceptualized by parish priest Fr Anil Prakash Castelino, the ‘Moj Masti Gadyant Khell’ on Sunday, July 6 became an instant hit with locals.

The event kicked off with a brief inaugural ceremony at 9:30 am, where Fr Rolwyn Fernandes offered the traditional pan-pod ani udak. The dais also featured Fr Jassil Coutinho, pastoral council leaders John Martis and Gabriel Martis, and ICYM representatives including Jeevan Pereira and Princia Noronha.

Celebrating Heritage Through Sport

John Martis reflected on the shift from farming to modern lifestyles, noting how this initiative connects youth with their agricultural roots. “This is not just fun, but a lesson in tradition,” he said.

Fr Rolwyn emphasized the event’s educational value, especially in introducing children to paddy cultivation—a practice often forgotten in urban settings. ICYM president Jeevan Pereira highlighted that the event stemmed directly from Fr Anil’s vision of creating an engaging, heritage-rich experience for all.

Fun, Felicitation, and Community Spirit

The organizers honored Jefry D’Souza (field owner) and Richard Alva (lunch sponsor) with shawls. Post the stage event, parishioners of all ages plunged into the slushy field for races, treasure hunts, tug-of-war, relays, dodgeball, and more. Tug-of-war matches between ward groups stole the show, stirring cheers and community spirit.

Meanwhile, children reveled in the mud, with even Fr Anil joining them for playful moments. The joyous mess captured the very essence of unity and tradition.

Fr Anil thanked all contributors, especially the dedicated ICYM team, and announced that prizes will be distributed during ‘Moriyek Ek Sang’ on July 20.

The event wrapped up by 4:30 pm, leaving hearts full and memories muddy—but unforgettable.
