In a heartbreaking incident in Nittoor, Udupi, a one-year-old girl tragically lost her life on June 4 after allegedly getting entangled in a saree cradle.

The victim, Kaalamma, was the daughter of Ayyappa (27), a native of Puttur village, currently residing in a rented house owned by Gangadhar in Nittoor. Ayyappa, who has been working in Udupi for three years, had reportedly placed his wife and daughter to rest in a traditional cloth cradle (joli) before heading to work.

Upon returning home later that day, Ayyappa found Kaalamma unconscious, with the saree wrapped tightly around her neck. In a desperate attempt to save her, he rushed her to a private hospital in Udupi, where doctors sadly declared her brought dead.

Preliminary findings indicate the child may have suffocated—possibly after slipping or shifting in her sleep, causing the saree to constrict around her neck.

The Udupi Town Police have registered a case and launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the tragedy.

This incident serves as a painful reminder of the potential risks involved with traditional cradles and the need for child-safe sleeping alternatives.
