The condition of roads across Udupi city has deteriorated to a critical state, posing serious safety risks and daily inconvenience—especially for two-wheeler riders. With nearly every major road riddled with deep, waterlogged potholes, commuting has become hazardous and frustrating.

Persistent monsoon rains have worsened the situation, making it hard for motorists to gauge the depth of potholes. This has led to frequent accidents, slow traffic movement, and severe congestion, particularly during peak hours.

The road near Swagatha Gopura in Kinnimulki has completely worn away. As construction continues at Ambalpady, traffic is being diverted through this severely damaged stretch, further straining the already weakened surface. Similarly, roads near Jodukatte, used by hundreds including ambulances en route to District and TMA Pai Hospitals, are crumbling. A recent incident involving a two-wheeler rider injured in a pothole has raised alarm over poor-quality repairs.

The free left at Kalsanka Junction is in shambles. Diversions implemented on weekends to manage traffic only redirect vehicles through equally damaged roads, worsening jams.

Despite the importance of roads like those near the Udupi Everyday Market, no lasting repair work has been done. Social worker Nithyanand Volakad slammed authorities for poor workmanship and alleged corruption. “It feels like only 40% of the roadwork is done properly—the rest vanishes into commissions,” he said.

City Commissioner Mahantesh Hangaragi assured that repairs will begin once the rains subside.

Meanwhile, residents continue to appeal for urgent, permanent restoration before more lives are endangered.
