Coastal districts of Karnataka remain on high alert as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red warning for intense to very intense rainfall along the region’s shoreline.
In anticipation of worsening weather conditions, the administrations in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have declared Monday a holiday for all educational institutions—including government, private schools, and Anganwadi centres—up to high school level.
Deputy Commissioners from both districts emphasized that the suspension of classes is a preventive measure due to flooding, waterlogging, and the increasing threat of landslides. Educational authorities have been advised to ensure all safety protocols are in place before reopening.
In the wake of these torrential rains, heartbreaking incidents have emerged. In Uttara Kannada, a two-year-old child tragically drowned after accidentally falling into a drain filled with rainwater near their home in Jali, Bhatkal. CCTV footage confirmed the incident occurred on Saturday.
In a separate tragedy, Madewa Narayana Devadiga, a 50-year-old man from Gulme Belalkhanda village in Bhatkal taluk, was swept away by strong flood currents while trying to make his way home. He reportedly lost his footing. Both incidents have been reported to the Bhatkal Rural Police.
With both red and orange alerts active in various districts, authorities have placed emergency response teams on standby. Residents have been urged to stay indoors during heavy rainfall and remain cautious around flood-prone areas.
