Udupi: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a red alert for Udupi district, predicting extremely heavy rainfall and gusty winds over the next 48 hours.

As per the IMD forecast, the region can expect heavy to very heavy showers at several locations, with some areas likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall. Wind speeds of 30–40 kmph are also expected to accompany the downpour, raising concerns about waterlogging, tree falls, and localized flooding.

District authorities have urged residents to remain indoors, avoid unnecessary travel, and follow safety protocols. Emergency teams have been kept on standby to respond to any weather-related incidents.

In addition to rainfall warnings, coastal zones from Byndoor to Kaup have been placed under a high wave alert. The sea is expected to remain rough, with wave heights reaching 3.7 to 3.8 meters between 5:30 PM on July 25 and 8:30 PM on July 27.

Fisherfolk have been strictly advised not to venture into the sea, and authorities have suspended all nearshore recreational activities until further notice. The alert also warns of coastal erosion and wave surges, urging people living near the shoreline to exercise caution.

The district administration continues to monitor the situation closely and has requested public cooperation to ensure safety.
