Udupi– Torrential rains battering the Udupi district for the past four days have inundated several low-lying areas, triggering flood-like conditions across key taluks including Byndoor, Kundapur, Karkala, and Barkur.

Overflowing rivers and fast-moving currents have raised concerns among local residents, particularly in Byndoor and nearby villages, where roads are submerged, making travel difficult. Despite the worsening situation, only schools and Anganwadi centres have been shut. PU colleges, technical institutes, and degree colleges remain open, causing distress for students wading through waterlogged routes to reach classes.

District officials have deployed emergency response teams for rescue and relief operations. MLA Gururaj Gantihole and assistant commissioner Rashmi personally assessed the flood-affected areas to coordinate support efforts.

In Kundapur’s Kavradi village, a house sustained partial damage after a massive tree was uprooted by strong winds and collapsed on the structure.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Udupi on June 16, warning of continued heavy downpours and gusty winds. Authorities have urged residents near riverbanks and in flood-prone zones to remain vigilant. Fishermen and tourists have also been strictly advised to avoid venturing into the sea until weather conditions stabilize.
