Udupi: Concerns have been raised over the condition of the Koosamma Shambhu Shetty Memorial Haji Abdullah Government Mother & Child Hospital after several infrastructure and sanitation deficiencies were reportedly observed within the healthcare facility. Patients and their relatives have highlighted issues ranging from waterlogging and poor maintenance to the presence of mosquitoes and rodents, prompting calls for immediate corrective measures.
The hospital, which caters to a large number of women, children and economically disadvantaged patients from Udupi and surrounding areas, is facing criticism over conditions that visitors say could impact patient comfort, hygiene and safety.
Waterlogging and waste create unhygienic conditions
During a recent visit to the hospital, sections of the first floor were reportedly found affected by stagnant water accumulation and waste. Water from hand-wash areas was allegedly flowing into parts of the premises, creating inconvenience for patients and attendants while raising concerns about sanitation.
Visitors stated that the accumulation of water has contributed to unhygienic conditions within the building. The situation has become particularly concerning as the monsoon season approaches, increasing the possibility of further water-related problems if corrective measures are not undertaken promptly.
Patients and attendants expressed concern that inadequate drainage and maintenance could adversely affect the hospital environment, particularly in a facility dedicated to mothers, newborns and children.
Patients complain of lack of basic facilities
Prashant, a resident of Udyavar, alleged that the hospital lacks several basic facilities expected in a major government healthcare institution.
According to him, some patients seeking scan services have occasionally been advised to approach other hospitals when staff members were unavailable or unable to provide immediate assistance.
He further claimed that his wife, who recently delivered a baby and is currently admitted to the hospital, has been facing difficulties due to the presence of rats and mosquitoes on the fifth floor.
Prashant also highlighted concerns regarding waterlogging in the parking area, describing it as unhygienic and inconvenient for patients and visitors. He stated that many families relying on the hospital cannot afford treatment in private medical institutions and therefore depend heavily on government healthcare services.
Emphasising the need for improvements, he urged authorities to address the issues and enhance facilities for the welfare of patients and their families.
Ceiling damage and maintenance concerns reported
Concerns have also been raised regarding the maintenance of the hospital building. During the visit, damaged and broken portions of the ceiling were reportedly visible in certain sections.
According to allegations made by visitors, a portion of the ceiling had previously collapsed and caused injuries to a woman. While details regarding the incident were not independently verified, the claim has added to concerns about structural maintenance within the facility.
During the visit of MLA Yashpal Suvarna, temporary repair work was reportedly carried out on parts of the ceiling. A patient’s relative also alleged that an area on the first floor, which had remained open earlier, was closed ahead of the MLA’s inspection.
These developments have prompted calls for a comprehensive assessment of the building’s condition to ensure the safety of patients, staff and visitors.
Mosquito menace raises health concerns
The presence of stagnant water within the hospital premises has reportedly led to an increase in mosquito activity, raising fears of mosquito-borne diseases.
Visitors pointed out that a mother and child hospital should maintain the highest standards of hygiene and sanitation, given the vulnerability of pregnant women, newborns and young children.
There are concerns that stagnant water could become a breeding ground for mosquitoes capable of spreading diseases such as dengue and malaria. Public health experts generally stress the importance of preventing mosquito breeding in healthcare facilities to reduce health risks for patients.
The reported presence of rats and mosquitoes in patient care areas has further intensified demands for immediate sanitation drives and pest-control measures.
Need for improved infrastructure and facilities
Apart from sanitation issues, concerns were also raised about inadequate ventilation and the lack of properly functioning lift facilities within the hospital.
Visitors noted that lifts are essential for pregnant women, children, senior citizens and patients with mobility challenges. Any disruption in lift services can create significant difficulties for those requiring access to higher floors.
Healthcare advocates have emphasised that government hospitals play a crucial role in providing affordable medical care and therefore require regular maintenance and infrastructure upgrades to meet patient needs effectively.
With concerns continuing to surface regarding sanitation, structural maintenance and basic amenities, patients and their families are hoping that authorities will undertake comprehensive remedial measures to improve conditions at the hospital and ensure a safe and hygienic environment for all.
