Udupi: A 45-year-old scooter rider died after a Maruti Swift allegedly collided with his two-wheeler near a petrol pump in Shirva on Friday evening, August 7.
The deceased has been identified as Prakash Acharya, a resident of Indrapura in Shirva and the owner of Shirva Devi Winding Centre.
According to preliminary information, Prakash was waiting near the roadside by a petrol pump at around 7.30 pm. He was reportedly preparing to cross the main road and take the Kuthyar road towards his residence when the accident occurred.
Car allegedly crosses into opposite lane
The Swift car was reportedly travelling from the Belman side when the driver allegedly attempted to overtake another vehicle.
During the manoeuvre, the car is said to have moved onto the opposite side of the road and collided with Prakash’s scooter.
The impact was severe and caused extensive damage to the two-wheeler. Prakash sustained serious injuries in the collision and was immediately shifted for medical treatment.
He was first taken to the Shirva Community Health Centre for emergency care. Considering the severity of his injuries, he was subsequently shifted to a hospital in Manipal for further treatment.
Despite medical efforts, Prakash succumbed to his injuries.
Police register case
The Shirva police have registered a case in connection with the fatal accident and initiated an investigation.
Police are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the collision, including the alleged high speed of the car and the overtaking manoeuvre that reportedly preceded the crash.
The exact circumstances leading to the vehicle moving onto the opposite side of the road will be established as part of the investigation.
The accident has also highlighted the risks faced by two-wheeler riders and pedestrians waiting to cross busy roads, particularly at locations where vehicles frequently attempt overtaking manoeuvres.
