Udupi: As part of the Shiroor Mutt Paryaya festival set for January 2026, the ‘Akki Muhurta’—one of the four significant pre-Paryaya rituals—was observed on Thursday. This sacred tradition involves the collection of rice from devotees to facilitate mass feeding at Sri Krishna Mutt, established by Sri Madhwacharya, the proponent of Dvaita philosophy.

Sacred Tradition Continues

Leading the ceremony, Sri Vedavardhana Thirtha Swamiji of Shiroor Mutt, who will ascend the Paryaya Peetha on January 18, emphasized the divine nature of food. “Devotees must actively participate in the sacred Paryaya festival of Lord Krishna. In our tradition, food is revered as God, and the presence of all Ashta Mutt seers during this ritual is a great blessing,” he said.

Preserving Time-Honored Customs

Sri Vidyasagar Thirtha Swamiji of Krishnapura Mutt highlighted the importance of preserving traditions amid modern changes. “These pre-Paryaya rituals guide us in seeking divine grace. In earlier times, rice was given as a reward for service. It is our duty to uphold these sacred customs,” he remarked.

Offerings and Procession

As part of the ritual, Mushthi Akki (handful rice) offerings were made by Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala, the Ashta Mutts, and other religious institutions. The collected rice was then ceremoniously stored in Shiroor Mutt. A grand procession followed, with prayers at Sri Chandramoulishwara Temple, Sri Anantheshwara Temple, and other shrines.

With Bale Muhurta performed in December, the upcoming Kattige Muhurta and Bhattha Muhurta rituals will further prepare for the Paryaya festival.
