Maravanthe: A 40-year-old fisherman from Maravanthe, Nagaraj Kharvi, died after accidentally falling into the sea when strong winds caused his fishing boat to sway early Wednesday morning.
The incident occurred around 5 am, about 200 metres from the Maravanthe outer harbour.
Fisherman loses balance as boat sways
Nagaraj had left home around 4.30 am to go fishing and reached the Maravanthe harbour. While the boat was about 200 metres from the harbour in the Arabian Sea, strong winds suddenly caused it to sway.
Nagaraj lost his balance and fell into the sea.
The other fishermen on board immediately pulled him out and administered first aid before rushing him to the Government Hospital in Kundapur. However, doctors examined him and declared that he had already died.
Family left in shock
Nagaraj is survived by his wife, a seven-year-old son and a five-year-old daughter.
Based on a complaint filed by his brother Srinivas Kharvi, Gangolli Police have registered a case and are investigating the incident.
Strong winds force boats back
The weather conditions also disrupted fishing activity along the coast.
Several boats and fishing vessels had set out from Gangolli, Maravanthe, Koderi and Shiroor on Wednesday morning. However, strong winds forced the fishermen to cut short their trips and return to shore.
The incident has highlighted the risks faced by fishermen venturing into the Arabian Sea during adverse weather conditions.
