Udupi: In a key development, the Udupi Municipal Corporation has approved the temporary transfer of water supply management from Baje Dam to Suez Project, a specialized water contracting company. This decision was taken during a Varahi water supply review meeting held at Satyamurthy Hall, chaired by Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna.
As per the resolution, Suez Project will take over operations on a three-month trial basis. MLA Suvarna announced that the handover will be completed within 15 days, but noted that any public complaints may lead to a delay. He emphasized that technical challenges within the Varahi system must be addressed within this period, ensuring smooth and increased supply as Udupi expands toward metropolitan status. With more gram panchayats expected to be included, the demand for water will naturally rise.
Sudeep, project manager of the Varahi water supply firm, mentioned that they’ve already been assigned management for eight years, and now request formal control over Baje Dam operations. He assured that all system issues will be resolved, and a 24/7 water supply would be achieved.
Currently, 28 MLD (Million Litres per Day) of water is pumped from Baje. Plans are in place to increase this to 36 MLD. Additionally, the infrastructure will be upgraded from 10 to 17 tanks, and the city will be divided into 17 water supply zones, replacing the current four.
