Kaup: Police have arrested two brothers in connection with the murder of a 60-year-old woman at Manipura in Kaup. The accused have been identified as Praveen Mendonca and Valerian Mendonca.

According to police, the victim has been identified as Vanaja Poojarthi (60), who was living in the neighbourhood of the accused.

Argument allegedly led to fatal attack

Preliminary investigation indicates that the accused brothers were acquainted with the victim and reportedly used to consume alcohol with her on several occasions.

Police said the incident occurred sometime between 5 pm on Monday, March 9, and 7 am on Tuesday, March 10.

During this period, a trivial argument is believed to have broken out between the victim and the accused. Following the dispute, Valerian Mendonca and Praveen Mendonca allegedly attacked Vanaja Poojarthi with a sharp weapon.

The attack resulted in severe injuries, leading to her death at the spot.

Case registered and investigation launched

Following the incident, a case was registered at the Kaup police station and an investigation was launched to determine the exact circumstances leading to the murder.

Police teams visited the scene of the crime soon after the matter came to light.

Forensic teams inspect crime scene

As part of the investigation, a forensic team from KMC visited the spot and carried out a detailed examination of the scene.

The Scene of Crime Officers (SoCO) team also inspected the location to collect material evidence related to the incident.

In addition, a dog squad and fingerprint experts were deployed to assist the investigators in gathering clues from the crime scene.

Officials said that evidence collected during the inspection would help reconstruct the sequence of events that led to the murder.

Accused taken into custody

Police later traced and arrested the two brothers in connection with the case.

They are currently being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.

Authorities said further inquiries are underway to establish the motive behind the crime and to verify the exact sequence of events that led to the fatal attack.

Police have also indicated that statements from neighbours and other witnesses are being recorded as part of the probe.
