Udupi Deputy Commissioner T.K. Swaroopa on Monday directed private bus operators to install doors in all buses and ensure they remain closed while plying, emphasising the importance of passenger safety.

Presiding over a Regional Transport Authority (RTA) meeting in Udupi, the Deputy Commissioner said that operators must give top priority to commuter safety, especially on busy routes.

She also instructed that seats reserved for senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and women should not be occupied by others, and that bus staff should ensure these rules are followed strictly.

The directive comes amid growing concerns over road safety and passenger discipline in private buses operating across the district.

Officials from the Transport Department, police, and representatives of bus operators’ associations attended the meeting.
