Udupi: The ‘Shakti’ scheme, a key initiative by the Karnataka state government offering free bus travel for women, has emerged as a powerful tool for women’s empowerment, said Udupi Deputy Commissioner Swaroopa T.K during a celebratory event at the KSRTC bus station, Bannanje.

The program, organized by the Udupi Zilla Panchayat Guarantee Implementation Authority, marked a significant milestone with over 500 crore free journeys completed by women since the scheme’s launch.

“Of the five flagship guarantee schemes launched by the state, Shakti was the first, rolled out on June 11, 2023,” noted DC Swaroopa. “It extends free travel on government buses to women, girls, and gender minorities across Karnataka. The government has already infused ₹12,000 crore into state transport to sustain the scheme.”

She highlighted that Shakti has allowed girls and women to travel independently for education, work, and daily errands—reducing their dependence on male family members. She encouraged young women to use this opportunity to pursue education and aim for leadership roles.

Ashok Kodavooru, Chair of the District Guarantee Scheme Implementation Committee, emphasized the state’s financial planning behind the schemes, adding that 2.57 crore women in Udupi alone have benefited, with ₹90.10 crore disbursed.

Former Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake applauded the scheme for enabling women’s social mobility, noting how it has unlocked opportunities in education, tourism, jobs, and religious travel.

The event drew participation from local officials, KSRTC staff, Red Cross members, and citizens.
