The Udupi District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) has issued important guidelines to protect workers from the extreme heat, urging employers not to have workers laboring under direct sunlight between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. During this hot season, the authority emphasizes the need for adequate hydration and regular breaks for workers.
In a statement, DDMA chairperson and Deputy Commissioner K. Vidyakumari stressed the importance of providing sufficient shade for workers exposed to direct sunlight. She recommended that workers hydrate every 20 minutes or more and take necessary rest periods. For major construction projects, the DC also suggested considering night shifts, where feasible, to avoid the harsh midday sun.
These measures were introduced to protect workers in various sectors, especially in building construction, street vending, and transportation. Employers are instructed to ensure that workers have access to cool drinking water and electrolyte solutions to combat dehydration. The DC also recommended scheduling heavy physical tasks in the cooler hours—either early morning before 11 a.m. or after 4 p.m.
In addition, Ms. Vidyakumari urged employers to conduct periodic medical check-ups for workers as per guidelines from the Union Health Ministry. For those working indoors, employers must ensure that the work environment is cool and comfortable to prevent heat-related issues.
