Udupi: The newly formed Udupi Konkans was formally launched with a prize distribution and felicitation ceremony in Udupi, bringing together community leaders, artists, professionals and well-wishers with a vision to connect the Konkani-speaking community across the Udupi Diocese.

The organisation aims to promote social, educational and economic development while creating opportunities in employment, education, business and entrepreneurship.

The programme was presided over by Bishop Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza of the Udupi Diocese. Fr Denis D’Souza, dean of Udupi deanery and parish priest of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi, Fr Vincent Crasta, director of Anugraha, Philomena Cornelio, Walter Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld Media, Regan Lewis of Daddy’s Art Gallery, Rajan Lewis and other dignitaries were present.

In his keynote address, Fr Denis D’Souza said the organisation was envisioned as a platform to bring together people with diverse talents and abilities. Comparing every individual to a ‘Golden Buddha’, he said Udupi Konkans would seek to help people realise their potential and contribute to society.

He highlighted plans to connect parishes across the diocese and collaborate with community organisations in Udupi and beyond.

UdupiKonkans.com website launched

Bishop Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza launched the official UdupiKonkans.com website during the programme, marking an important step towards strengthening communication and connectivity within the community.

Artists felicitated at the programme

Philomena Cornelio, artist Peter Lewis, Walter Nandalike and Bishop Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza were felicitated during the event.

Peter Lewis spoke about his journey in art and stressed the importance of passion and dedication. He also congratulated the artists who participated in the competition.

Walter Nandalike described Peter Lewis as the ‘Pablo Picasso of our community’ and urged young artists to pursue their work with discipline, dedication and commitment.

He also called upon Udupi Konkans to address social issues, create awareness about government schemes and opportunities, and listen to the younger generation.

Focus on education and healthcare

Bishop Dr Leslie Clifford D’Souza said Udupi Konkans could help give the community a distinct identity while encouraging young people to remain connected to their roots.

He called upon the organisation to become a ‘Voice for Truth’ and ‘Voice for Justice’ and contribute to community development.

The bishop also emphasised the need for quality education and healthcare facilities, including institutions in nursing, medicine and engineering. He said work was already underway towards establishing Grorreeti Hospital with the cooperation of priests, nuns and community leaders.

39 artists take part in competition

A total of 39 artists participated in the art competition and presented their paintings. The winners were announced by Clearance Fernandes, while all participants were honoured.

The event was welcomed by Dr Vincent Alva, compered by Leslie Aroza and concluded with a vote of thanks by advisor Wilson D’Souza.

The launch marked the beginning of an initiative focused on bringing together community talent, leadership and participation while creating opportunities for wider development in the Udupi region.
