Udupi: In a decisive move to ease traffic congestion in the city, the Udupi police have launched a special operation targeting illegal parking, warning that vehicles parked outside designated zones will be locked and fined on the spot.

The crackdown began in full force on Monday, with multiple vehicles near the service and city bus stands already being wheel-locked. Despite clearly marked “No Parking” zones and available designated parking areas, many motorists continue to flout rules by parking haphazardly, leading to traffic disruptions.

Police say the aim is not to harass vehicle owners, but to ensure the smooth flow of traffic, particularly in busy transit hubs. A traffic police official noted, “People park from morning to evening in no-parking zones. That affects movement for everyone. We’re forced to act.”

Previously, the department used a towing vehicle to remove illegally parked cars. However, the towing truck is currently out of service. The district police have submitted a proposal to acquire a new towing vehicle, expected to further bolster enforcement efforts.
