Udupi: The Udupi district police have intensified enforcement against traffic violations involving vehicles transporting schoolchildren, booking 43 vehicles and collecting ₹30,800 in fines during a special drive conducted between July 20 and July 27.
The initiative was aimed at ensuring the safety of students travelling to and from schools by checking compliance with traffic and transport regulations.
Over 370 vehicles inspected
According to a press note issued by the police, officials inspected a total of 371 vehicles, including 204 school buses, 69 mini buses, 65 autorickshaws, and 33 cars used to transport students.
During the inspections, authorities found that 29 vehicles were carrying students beyond the permitted seating capacity, posing a potential safety risk.
Multiple traffic violations detected
The police also identified other violations during the drive. In five vehicles, drivers were found not wearing the prescribed uniform, while other traffic-related offences contributed to the total of 43 cases booked.
Officials imposed fines amounting to ₹30,800 on the violators and instructed vehicle operators to strictly adhere to safety norms while transporting schoolchildren.
Safety drive to continue
The district police said the enforcement drive forms part of ongoing efforts to improve road safety and ensure that vehicles carrying students comply with legal and safety requirements.
Authorities urged school managements, vehicle owners and drivers to follow transport regulations, avoid overcrowding and maintain prescribed safety standards to ensure the well-being of students.
The police indicated that similar inspections will continue across the district to prevent violations and promote safer school transportation.
