Udupi: The district sports hostel near Ajjarkad Stadium in Udupi is facing criticism over the poor upkeep of basic infrastructure provided to athletes staying at the facility.

The hostel currently accommodates 65 athletes from Class 8 to graduation, including 30 girls. The athletes receive free sports coaching at Ajjarkad Stadium during morning and evening sessions, along with education, accommodation and food.

Athletes point to damaged facilities

The athletes are provided with facilities including bunker beds, a washing machine and hot water. While they appreciate the nutritious food served at the hostel, including mutton, chicken and eggs, they have raised concerns about the condition of several facilities.

One athlete said the washing machine, geyser and roof were in poor condition, affecting the day-to-day facilities available to those staying at the hostel.

Broken roof raises rain concerns

According to the inmates, several tiles on the boys’ hostel roof are broken, allowing rainwater to seep into the building.

The athletes have also raised concerns about an old washing machine that is no longer functioning and may pose a risk of electric shock. Some switchboards in the hostel are reportedly damaged as well.

Another major concern is the availability of hot water. The hostel has only one geyser, which the athletes said is inadequate for the number of people accommodated at the facility.

Athletes seek better maintenance

The sports hostel provides athletes with an opportunity to combine education and professional sports training, with free coaching and basic accommodation and food.

However, the concerns raised by the inmates highlight the need for regular maintenance and timely repairs to ensure that the infrastructure provided to young athletes remains safe and functional.

Addressing the damaged roof, electrical fittings, washing machine and inadequate hot-water facilities could help provide the athletes with safer and more comfortable living conditions while they pursue their sporting ambitions.
