Udupi: In a major push for eco-tourism and sustainable travel, a 14km dedicated cycling track from Kaup to Padukere is in the pipeline under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme, revealed Udupi Deputy Commissioner Vidyakumari K. The project aims to promote responsible tourism and offer both tourists and locals a green mobility alternative along the coastal stretch.

A team of officials from the tourism department recently inspected the proposed location as part of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) preparation. The state government, through an empanelled agency, will submit the DPR. The Centre had granted in-principle approval in March 2023, with preliminary work beginning around June-July. However, final approvals, including environmental clearances, are still pending.

Tourism department’s Assistant Director Kumar CU stated that the project awaits a crucial No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) and other statutory bodies before execution can begin.

The DC highlighted that the proposal was pitched to the central government under the eco-tourism concept. The beachside track is envisioned as a safe, scenic, and sustainable experience that will not only appeal to tourists but also encourage a healthier lifestyle among locals while reducing the carbon footprint.

Launched by the Ministry of Tourism, the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme promotes holistic tourism development rooted in the ‘Vocal for Local’ ethos and supports sustainable infrastructure, skill development, and destination management as part of the Aatmanirbhar Bharat mission.
