Karnataka and Goa cadets gear up for All-India Ocean Sailing challenge
Udupi, October 3, 2025: Udupi is set to become a hub for maritime training as 72 Naval NCC cadets from Karnataka and Goa prepare to embark on a 15-day river and ocean sailing expedition starting October 6. The camp is part of the prestigious All-India ‘Ocean Sailing Expedition – MENU (Most Entertaining Naval Unit) Trophy’, a key event for showcasing naval skills and endurance.
Organised by the Number 6 Karnataka Naval Unit of NCC, Udupi, under the guidance of the Karnataka and Goa NCC Directorate, the expedition will operate under Group Headquarters Mangaluru, headed by Col Viraj Kamath. Commandant Cdr Ashwin M. Rao, Commanding Officer of 6 KAR NU NCC, will lead the operational aspects of the camp.
Pre-MENU training camp prepares cadets
Before the main MENU camp, a five-day preparatory Pre-MENU training camp was held at SRS Campus, Udupi, starting October 1. Cdr Ashwin M. Rao formally inaugurated the training, which focused on equipping cadets with essential skills in boat handling, navigation, and safety procedures.
“The pre-MENU training is designed to ensure that cadets are thoroughly prepared for the challenges of the expedition,” Cdr Rao said. “The rigorous training phase not only tests their maritime knowledge but also builds teamwork, discipline, and endurance.”
A test of skill and national recognition
The MENU Trophy is considered one of the highest honours for a Naval NCC unit. The winning unit earns national recognition, with the Prime Minister presenting the award during the Republic Day parade. The upcoming expedition, therefore, is more than a training exercise; it is a competitive platform to put the skills and discipline of cadets from Karnataka and Goa to the test at a national level.
The cadets will face challenging conditions across rivers and open waters, making teamwork, strategy, and resilience critical to success. The camp will provide them with practical exposure to maritime operations, ensuring they gain valuable experience for future naval training and responsibilities.
Expanding maritime skills in India
Such expeditions play a crucial role in fostering maritime awareness and competence among youth. By participating in the MENU expedition, cadets not only enhance their naval skills but also contribute to a culture of discipline, adventure, and national pride within the NCC.
With the 15-day sailing camp set to commence on October 6, Udupi will witness an influx of young naval enthusiasts honing their maritime abilities, ready to compete for one of India’s most prestigious naval NCC awards.
