Udupi: The Udupi District Committee of the Karnataka State Tailors Association is all set to celebrate its Silver Jubilee with a grand convention and general meeting on August 10 at the Rajangana of Sri Krishna Math, Udupi. This milestone marks 25 years of the association’s service to the tailoring community, announced State Treasurer K. Ramachandra and District President Gururaja M. Shetty at a press conference.

The event will begin at 9:30 AM, inaugurated by Sugunendratheertha Sripad, head of the Paryaya Puttige Math. Prominent dignitaries including Assembly Speaker U.T. Khader, Labor Minister Santosh Lad, and District In-charge Minister Lakshmi Hebbalkar will be the chief guests.

Over 10 lakh tailors—both men and women—across Karnataka depend on this profession. The association, which has been lobbying for tailor welfare for over two decades, plans to use this convention to demand long-pending support from the state government.

Key demands include the creation of a ‘Future Fund’ for tailors, imposition of cess on textile products and tailoring materials, and access to benefits under social welfare schemes. The association insists tailors be recognized as unorganized workers, eligible for monthly stipends, pensions, scholarships, free healthcare, and insurance.

They urged the state to either form a dedicated Tailors’ Welfare Board or integrate their profession into the Textile Corporation to ensure sustained development and support.

General Secretary Dayanand Kotyan Korangrapadi and Joint Secretary Soumya Bhat were also present at the briefing.
