Udupi: The body of an unidentified man, believed to be aged between 30 and 35 years, was found floating in the Papanashini river at Pitrody in Udyavar on Tuesday, prompting an investigation by the Kaup police.
Police said they were alerted after local residents noticed the body in the river and informed the authorities.
Police begin investigation
Upon receiving the information, personnel from the Kaup Police Station rushed to the spot and carried out the necessary inquest and other legal formalities.
The area was secured while officers examined the scene and initiated an investigation to establish the identity of the deceased and the circumstances surrounding the death.
Police have not yet disclosed any preliminary findings regarding the cause of death.
Body shifted to district hospital
Following the completion of the initial procedures at the scene, the body was shifted to the district hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The operation was carried out with the assistance of social worker Nityanand Volakad, who helped authorities transport the body from the riverbank.
Officials said the post-mortem report is expected to assist investigators in determining the cause of death.
Efforts underway to identify the deceased
The deceased is believed to be around 30 to 35 years of age. However, his identity has not yet been established.
The Kaup police have registered a case and are making efforts to identify the man by verifying missing person records and gathering information from nearby localities.
Police have appealed to members of the public to contact the Kaup Police Station if they have any information that could help identify the deceased.
