Udupi MLA Yashpal Suvarna has pointed to haphazard urban expansion and poor infrastructure as the main reasons behind the artificial flooding witnessed in various parts of Udupi city. The recent spell of intense rainfall, driven by a pre-monsoon cyclone, has overwhelmed existing drainage systems and exposed serious shortcomings in city planning.

Speaking to the media, Suvarna noted that according to meteorological forecasts, the southwest monsoon was expected to begin after June 2. Preparations were underway accordingly, including the cleaning of major drains and desilting work along stormwater routes like the Rajakaluve. However, the sudden and heavy rains arrived early, catching the city off guard.

He criticized the narrowing of 10-foot-wide stormwater drains to just 5 feet due to encroachments and unauthorized construction, adding that such unscientific development has choked the natural drainage flow. “Artificial flooding is not merely a natural disaster—it’s a man-made one caused by poor planning,” he said.

MLA Suvarna has directed officials to remove obstructions and carry out remedial measures without delay or the need for prior notices. He emphasized that action should be taken decisively, regardless of encroachment excuses or delays.

He further assured that all cleaning and weed removal works will be finished by June 5. Structures and private developments that hinder rainwater flow will also be addressed. The MLA underlined the urgency to restore and protect water pathways before the full onset of monsoon.
