Udupi: In a remarkable display of endurance and artistry, Vidushi Deeksha V. has commenced her ambitious attempt to enter the Golden Book of World Records by performing Bharatanatyam continuously for 216 hours across nine days.
The dance marathon began at the Postgraduate Hall of Dr G. Shankar Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Ajjarkad, and will conclude on August 30.
Inauguration of the event
The programme was inaugurated by former MLA Raghupathi Bhat along with other distinguished guests, who lit the ceremonial lamp to mark the start of the record-setting endeavour.
Speaking at the event, Guru Sridhar Bannaje, Deeksha’s mentor, praised her dedication and commitment to classical dance.
“My student Deeksha is not only attempting a world record but also showcasing the depth of Indian classical arts. When she first approached me, I advised her to complete her Vidwat exam as preparation for such a feat. Having such a devoted disciple is the true reward for any teacher,” he said.
Aiming for the Golden Book of World Records
The performance will be non-stop, spanning day and night, testing the dancer’s stamina, precision, and mental focus. Bharatanatyam, known for its intricate movements, rhythm, and emotive expressions, requires years of training to perform at such an intense level.
This record attempt follows a similar achievement by Yashwant M.G., who previously secured a Golden Book of World Record by singing continuously for 24 hours.
Cultural significance
Local cultural organisations and art enthusiasts have extended their support to Deeksha, considering this feat as a milestone for Udupi’s performing arts scene. The event is also expected to attract attention from across India and beyond, bringing recognition to the region’s rich classical dance traditions.
