Udupi: Vidushi Deeksha V., a young and dedicated Bharatanatyam artiste from Mundkinajaddu in Brahmavar taluk, has set a new benchmark in classical dance endurance. She crossed 170 hours of continuous Bharatanatyam performance at 5:30 pm on Thursday at the PG auditorium of Dr. G. Shankara Women’s College, Ajjarkad. This surpasses the earlier record of 170 hours held by Remona Evette Perera of Mangaluru, which was recognised by the Golden Book of World Records.

The feat marks a significant cultural achievement for Karnataka’s Udupi district, widely regarded as a hub of classical dance and artistic traditions.

Journey towards the 216-hour goal

Deeksha began her performance marathon at 3:30 pm on August 21, 2025, under the patronage of Ratna Sanjeeva Kala Mandal, Manipal. Her theme, “Navarasa Diya Vaibhavam”, showcases the nine emotions (Navarasa) through intricate Bharatanatyam sequences.

Her aim is to complete a full 216 hours of dance over nine consecutive days, concluding at 3:30 pm on August 30, 2025, thereby setting a new Golden Book of World Records benchmark.

Recognition and support

The achievement has drawn attention from dance enthusiasts, cultural organisations and the local community. With every passing hour, the audience has witnessed her endurance, artistry and discipline as she performs the complex movements of Bharatanatyam with grace and precision.

Former record holder Remona Evette Perera had entered the Golden Book of World Records with a 170-hour performance, but Deeksha’s feat has already surpassed this. The final day of her performance is expected to draw large crowds as she concludes her journey.

Felicitation ceremony scheduled

A public felicitation will be held at the district stadium in Ajjarkad on August 30 at 5 pm, where Deeksha will be honoured with a Golden Book of World Records certificate. The event will see the presence of Manish Bishnoi, Asia head of Golden Book of World Records, along with public representatives, artists and cultural leaders.

A celebration of dedication

Deeksha’s performance represents more than just a world record; it signifies the enduring vitality of Bharatanatyam and the cultural richness of Udupi. Her achievement is expected to inspire a new generation of dancers and promote classical arts on a global platform.

Conclusion

As Udupi prepares to celebrate her milestone, Vidushi Deeksha V’s 216-hour dance journey will stand as a testament to passion, perseverance and devotion to India’s traditional art forms.
