Udupi: Large heaps of waste washed ashore during the monsoon continue to litter Malpe beach, drawing sharp criticism from residents and tourists alike. The scenic coastline, known for its pristine stretch and high visitor turnout, has been left strewn with plastic bottles, footwear, diapers, discarded toys, and food wrappers.
Locals blame lack of maintenance
Residents allege that the lack of timely cleaning has worsened since responsibility for beach maintenance shifted from the Beach Development Committee to the tourism department last year. Previously, waste was cleared at least two to three times during the rainy season. However, this year, no such effort has been undertaken, leading to heavy accumulation.
“The stench is unbearable, and dead fish are often found entangled with the debris brought in by the tides. It is disheartening to see such neglect of one of our most popular beaches,” said a local fisherman.
Tourists express disappointment
Tourists, who continue to visit the beach in large numbers during weekends, have voiced concern over the unhygienic conditions. Many say the heaps of garbage are ruining their experience and harming the image of Malpe as a clean coastal destination.
“It’s shocking to see so much plastic waste along the shore. The authorities need to act before this turns into a serious health hazard,” said a visitor from Bengaluru.
Concerns over upcoming immersions
The problem has raised additional concerns with Ganesh Chaturthi around the corner. Traditionally, idols from Malpe, Thottam, Kodiayali, Moodubettu, Kodavoor, Pandubettu, Kalmady and several local bhajan mandirs are immersed at Malpe beach. Residents fear the accumulated garbage may obstruct the immersion process and pollute the water further.
Call for urgent action
Locals have urged the tourism department to take immediate measures to clear the debris, especially with tourist numbers increasing and festive celebrations approaching. Environmental groups have also suggested deploying regular clean-up drives and involving volunteers to maintain the coastline throughout the year.
Conclusion
Malpe beach, a popular tourist spot and cultural hub, faces growing criticism over its unkempt state. With festivals approaching, residents hope swift action will restore its charm and ensure safe celebrations along the Udupi coastline.
