A delegation, including the woman who was tied to a tree and assaulted at Malpe Harbour over alleged fish theft, met Udupi Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari K on Monday, requesting case withdrawal.

Speaking to reporters, the woman stated that a compromise was reached on the same day, but police approached her later for details. “I was asked to sign documents, but since I cannot read, I am unaware of what transpired next,” she said.

Members of her community, who accompanied her, urged authorities to drop the case, emphasizing their long-standing harmony with Malpe’s fisherfolk. They alleged that police only acted after the assault video went viral.

Following the incident, five individuals were arrested, and the Udupi SP suspended two beat constables for failing to gather accurate information.
