The dream of relocating to a new building for the Government First Class Women’s College in Karwar appears unlikely to be realized this academic year due to a prolonged halt in construction.
The Public Works Department began construction of the college’s new building in March 2023, but progress has repeatedly stalled, reaching an impasse after completing the pillar and slab stage of the ground floor. Since May, there has been no further progress, raising concerns about the project’s future.
The delay is attributed to several factors, including technical issues cited by the government and a lack of funds. While the government has sanctioned grants for the project, the allocated amounts are insufficient to complete the building according to the original plan.
The college administration has expressed disappointment over the delays, as the current rented building is inadequate for their needs. They have urged the Public Works Department to expedite the construction process.
The Public Works Department has acknowledged the funding shortfall and is working on a new proposal to secure additional funds. However, some stakeholders are skeptical about the government’s intentions, suggesting that the delays might be a deliberate attempt to halt projects initiated by the previous administration.
