Tulsi Gowda, Karnataka’s renowned environmentalist and tree planter, passed away on Monday, 16 December, at her home in Honnali village, Uttara Kannada. She was 86 and succumbed to age-related complications after battling illness for the past eight months following a stroke. Despite medical treatment, her condition did not improve, and she remained bedridden.
Affectionately known as the “Encyclopedia of Forests” for her vast knowledge of plants and biodiversity, Gowda dedicated her life to conservation. It is estimated that she planted over one lakh saplings during her lifetime and diligently managed forest department nurseries for decades. Her tireless commitment to nurturing nature inspired generations.
Recognizing her invaluable contributions, the Government of India conferred her with the prestigious Padma Shri award in 2021, the nation’s fourth-highest civilian honor. She was also the recipient of numerous state and national awards, celebrating her unwavering devotion to protecting the environment.
Tulsi Gowda’s legacy as a champion of forests and biodiversity will continue to inspire efforts in environmental conservation.
