Yellapur (UTTARA KANNADA): A devastating road accident in Yellapur taluk early Wednesday morning resulted in the deaths of 10 people and left 15 others injured. A truck carrying vegetables and fruits lost control after colliding with an unidentified vehicle, plunging into a deep gorge.

Superintendent of Police M Narayan reported that the overloaded truck rear-ended a larger vehicle before veering off the road. “The victims were seated atop the produce. When the truck overturned, several passengers were crushed under its weight,” he stated.

The deceased were from Savanur, Haveri district, en route to weekly markets in Ankola and Kumta to sell their goods. Survivors, currently in ICU, are stable, officials confirmed.

Yellapur police inspector Ramesh Honnapur cited dense fog and a burst tyre as likely causes of the crash. The injured were immediately shifted to KIMS Hospital in Hubballi.

Mohammad, one of the survivors, recalled the terrifying moment: “We’ve been selling produce in these markets for years. Around 3:30 AM, the truck’s tyre burst, and we fell into a pit. I was buried under a pile of vegetables as I struggled to escape.”

One of the deceased, Aslam Baabuli Benni, had been married just two months ago. His grieving family is struggling to cope with the loss.

CM Siddaramaiah announced ₹3 lakh compensation for each victim’s family and free medical care for the injured. He urged citizens to drive cautiously to prevent such tragedies.
