Vijayapura: Minister M.B. Patil’s reference to Leader of the Opposition in Vidhan Parishad, Chhalavadi Narayanaswamy, as a “shed customer” has sparked controversy, with the BJP condemning the remark as an insult to the Dalit community.
Manjunath Meese, President of the Morcha district unit, criticised Congress leaders, claiming they are intolerant of a Dalit leading the opposition in the BJP. He further alleged that the Congress party exploits Dalits for their vote bank and has failed to accord Narayanaswamy the respect and facilities due to him as the Leader of the Opposition, despite his month-long tenure.
Meese demanded an apology from Minister Patil for his remarks, asserting that they were an affront to the Dalit community. He also questioned the minister’s motives, suggesting the comment was intended to curry favour with Congress leaders Mallikarjuna Kharge and Rahul Gandhi.
Chidananda Chhalavadi, a BJP leader, defended Narayanaswamy, noting that the BJP had recognised and honoured him for his contributions. He further criticised Minister Patil’s concern for Dalits, pointing to the alleged misuse of ₹11,000 crore allocated for Dalit welfare.
The press conference was also attended by Bheemanna Nilayamani, T. Siddalingappa Makhanapur, Puneeth Kamble, and Siddalinga Makhanapur.
