Jackfruit, or kathal in Hindi, is a tropical fruit packed full of nutrients that are beneficial for your body and important for preventing many diseases, including diabetes and cancer.

Native to Southwest India, the fruit is often used as a substitute for meat by vegans and vegetarian due to its fibrous texture.

The fruit is so popular in India that the state of Kerala declared it as its “official fruit” in 2018.

So, recently, when a leading British daily gave an ignorant description to the fruit, Indians on social media were left fuming.

The Guardian drew flak on social media, especially Twitter after it called jackfruit “a spectacularly ugly, smelly, unfarmed, unharvested pest-plant native to India,”

The article in question was about jackfruits and how it is very popular among vegans around the world.

The versatile South Asian fruit can be consumed raw or cooked. It is high in nutrients and antioxidants, providing a number of health benefits.

When the article was shared online, many Indians thought that Britishers had just discovered jackfruit in their markets. However, a large number of users were both angry and amazed by the daily’s ignorance.

One user wrote, “This is ridiculous. We don’t eat jackfruit because ‘there is nothing better to eat’. And most of your recipes sound disgusting. It’s a vegetable, with brilliant coastal preparations that we have been eating and looking forward to eating since my childhood. So much ignorance.”

“This is an extremely poorly researched article. Not what you would expect from the Guardian,” wrote another.
