Afghan fan Murtaza Ahmad received a special gift from Lionel Messi. The Argentine football star sent two signed jerseys and a football to Kabul through UNICEF. Earlier, a photograph of the boy wearing a plastic bag with “Messi” penned on it became viral on the Internet. Murtaza travelled to the Afghanistan capital from Ghazni with his family to collect the gifts.

Argentine football star Lionel Messi wowed a five-year-old Afghan fan by sending not one but two jerseys. The boy became an instant hit on the Internet after he was photographed wearing a plastic bag with “Messi” penned on it.

Messi sent the jerseys through UNICEF, where is a goodwill ambassador. The lucky Murtaza Ahmad, alongwith his family travelled from the eastern Ghazni province to Kabul to receive his special gifts, which also included a football.

UNICEF said Messi wrote “With much love” in Spanish on the jerseys.

“Murtaza couldn’t stop smiling. He kept repeating: I love Messi,” UNICEF Afghanistan spokesman Denise Shepherd-Johnson told AFP.

Messi has taken such initiatives in the past and therefore, it wasn’t surprising when he decided to send two more of his jerseys for the impoverished Afghan boy. After his brother, Homayoun, posted photos of Murtaza wearing the improvised jersey on Facebook, he came to known as “Little Messi” in the entire football world.

Messi, considered by many to be the best footballer in the world (we do not intend to hurt Cristiano Ronaldo fans), reportedly wanted to meet the five-year but the reports could not verified.
