As a kid she was told by a school that she is a ‘Monster’and was denied admission. Now she is a 31-year-old woman and has a class of her own, isn’t that amazing? It is a slap on the face of people who denied her admission. She is now the first person with Down Syndrome to work as preschool teacher in Argentina and is also one of the few in the world.
Noelia Garella’s case has set an example for many who questioned the abilities of people with down syndrome, that a person with a cognitive syndrome can handle a group of kids. Her two and three-year-old pupils gather around her lovingly in her classroom in the Jermonito nursery.
At her one request the little ones adorably sit down and watch her as she goes on reading stories to them. “I adore this. Ever since I was little, I have always wanted to be a teacher, because I like children so much,” she told AFP.
She got immense support not just from the school authorities but also from the parents, they saw no reason that Garella could not teach early-learning reading classes. Rather her determination inspired her colleagues to hire her at the pre-school in the northern city of Cordoba.
The principal of the school told that she actually gave the children in the nursery classes most appreciate which is love. Though Down Syndrome is a genetic condition which can typically affect a person’s physical and intellectual growth but it has done nothing to reduce her optimism and self-belief.
