Coimbatore: The immediate transformation that India experienced in the aftermath of the demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes was the sight of long lines outside banks and ATMs, most of which end in ATMs either running out of cash or remaining shut for days at a stretch.

Becoming a source for quick withdrawal of cash, ATMs had become a part of life in urban India, but were the first casualties of the new policy as they will be replaced by new ones for distributing Rs 500 and Rs 2000 notes introduced recently.

While people have been voicing their displeasure with the government’s move, a group of women in Coimbatore went on to sing funeral songs for the “demise” of the ATM and also showered flowers on ATMs that are out of service.

Another similar demonstration of grief was seen in Kerala’s Kannur, where people placed wreaths in front of defunct ATMs. They demanded that people be given access to more ATMs and banks for withdrawing cash for daily needs.
