Widow of Pahalgam attack victim demands martyr status, vows to keep his memory alive
Ashanya Dwivedi, the grieving wife of Pahalgam terror attack victim Shubham Dwivedi, has appealed to the government to honor her late husband with the title of martyr. She said Shubham saved countless lives by courageously declaring his Hindu identity to the terrorists.
Speaking to PTI, Ashanya recalled the chilling moment. “The first bullet struck my husband as terrorists asked whether we were Hindu or Muslim. His brave response bought others time to escape,” she said.
The deadly attack near Pahalgam meadow claimed 26 lives, as gunmen unleashed terror on unsuspecting tourists. Shubham and Ashanya had married just months ago, on February 12. His final rites were held in his native village last Thursday.
Fighting back tears, Ashanya added, “I do not seek anything else. If Shubham is recognized as a martyr, I will find a reason to continue living.” She strongly condemned the attackers, saying anyone targeting people based on faith deserves no mercy.
She also revealed the horrifying realization when terrorists confronted them. At first, she mistook their questioning for a prank. But within moments, a gunshot shattered her world — Shubham lay bleeding beside her.
Begging them to kill her too, Ashanya said the terrorists instead spared her life, ordering her to tell the government about their brutal act.
In response, the Central government has intensified actions against Pakistan, suspending the Indus Waters Treaty among other measures.
