An 11-year-old boy has been ordered to stand trial as an adult after being accused of fatally shooting his adoptive father at their home in the United States.
The incident took place on January 13, the night of the child’s birthday. According to investigators, an argument reportedly broke out over video games earlier in the evening. Authorities allege that shortly after midnight, the boy accessed a revolver from a bedroom safe and shot his 42-year-old father, Douglas Dietz, while he was asleep.
Charged with criminal homicide
Prosecutors said the child has been charged with criminal homicide. Court records cited by US media indicate that he allegedly admitted to loading the firearm and firing the shot.
The victim’s wife reportedly told police she awoke to a loud noise and found her husband unresponsive. Officers also reported statements attributed to the child acknowledging the shooting.
The boy made his first court appearance on Thursday. Prosecutors argued that the seriousness of the offence justified transferring the case to adult court. A judge approved the request following a preliminary hearing.
Legal and psychological debate
Defence attorneys opposed the move, citing the child’s age, psychological development and family circumstances. They have indicated that they may challenge the ruling.
If tried and convicted as an adult, the child could face significantly harsher penalties than those available under the juvenile justice system.
The case has sparked renewed discussion in the United States over juvenile justice laws, mental health evaluation and the legal thresholds for transferring minors to adult courts.
Further hearings are scheduled as the case proceeds.
