At a time when short-form videos dominate online consumption, a bizarrely long YouTube upload has captured global attention for claiming a runtime of 140 years, leaving internet users confused, intrigued and unsettled.

The video’s thumbnail displays an astonishing duration equivalent to nearly 1.2 million hours, while the actual playback length is just 12 hours, 34 minutes and 56 seconds. Adding to the mystery, the description contains Arabic text that roughly translates to “Come, meet me in hell”, further fuelling speculation across social media.

What makes the video unusual

The viral video contains no visuals or audio. Viewers are greeted with a completely blank screen, with no sound, text or animation throughout its duration. There is also no explanation provided by the uploader, making the clip even more puzzling.

The account that uploaded the video, named shinywr, joined YouTube in July 2023 and currently has around 1.57 lakh subscribers. The account is reportedly linked online to North Korea, though this has not been independently verified.

Online reactions and theories

Since being uploaded on January 5, the video has crossed 2.5 million views. Comment sections are filled with theories, ranging from a platform glitch to a deliberate experiment or test upload by YouTube itself.

One user wrote, “What’s unsettling is that the thumbnail shows over a million hours, but it suddenly becomes 12 hours when you click play.” Another commented, “I stayed up all night expecting something to happen, and nothing did.”

Some users speculate it could be an algorithm stress test or metadata manipulation rather than an actual attempt to create ultra-long content.

Not the longest video on YouTube

Despite widespread claims, this is not the longest video ever uploaded to YouTube. That record still belongs to a 596.5-hour video uploaded by Jonathan Harchick in 2011.

For now, the 140-year video remains an internet curiosity — less about content, and more about how mystery, ambiguity and algorithms continue to drive viral trends.
