Forest fires have wreaked havoc in central Chile, claiming the lives of at least 51 individuals with authorities warning that the toll may rise further.
Emergency services are tirelessly battling the flames to protect urban areas from the spreading inferno.
The Valparaiso region, housing nearly one million people, is shrouded in thick black smoke as firefighters employ helicopters and trucks in their efforts to contain the blazes. Particularly hard-hit are the surroundings of the coastal tourist hub Vina del Mar, where rescue teams are struggling to access all affected areas.
Interior Minister Carolina Toha grimly announced the discovery of five bodies on public roads, hinting at the likelihood of a significantly higher death toll as the situation unfolds. Wildfires are a seasonal occurrence in Chile, but this year’s crisis is exacerbated by rapidly multiplying affected hectares.
Despite a smaller area engulfed compared to last year, the wildfires have rapidly expanded, now spanning 43,000 hectares from 30,000 between Friday and Saturday. Of utmost concern for authorities is the proximity of active fires to urban zones, posing grave threats to people, homes, and infrastructure.
