As India and China marked 75 years of diplomatic relations on Tuesday, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri outlined crucial lessons for strengthening bilateral ties. Speaking at an event hosted by the Chinese Embassy in New Delhi, Misri emphasized historical connections and the path forward.
He noted that while formal ties span 75 years, cultural and civilizational exchanges date back millennia. Citing historical figures like Bodhidharma and Rabindranath Tagore, he highlighted how both nations have significantly shaped human history.
Reflecting on recent tensions, he acknowledged the challenges in India-China relations but credited political and diplomatic efforts for resolving several border issues. He stressed that maintaining peace along the borders is essential for fostering stable ties.
Misri underscored recent high-level engagements, including meetings between foreign ministers, defence ministers, and special representatives. He revealed that India and China are resuming practical cooperation, starting with the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra, along with discussions on transport, rivers, and direct flights.
Calling for a fresh start, he emphasized a three-fold formula: mutual respect, mutual sensitivity, and mutual interest. Acknowledging the complexities ahead, he urged both nations to turn these promising beginnings into tangible benefits for their people.
