An eight-year-old boy was killed and 12 other people were injured after a reported Russian drone strike targeted the Cherkasy Oblast, Ukrainian officials said.

The update was shared by Ihor Taburets, who said the attack took place during the evening hours when strike drones hit the regional centre.

Child among victims

Officials said nine of the injured, including one child, were taken to hospital for treatment.

Three others reportedly received medical assistance at the scene.

Emergency teams were deployed immediately following the strike.

Residential buildings damaged

Authorities said debris from downed unmanned aerial vehicles damaged at least four multi-storey residential buildings.

Inspection and damage assessment operations were continuing in affected neighbourhoods.

Ukrainian officials also said air defence systems intercepted multiple aerial targets over the region.

Ongoing war continues to hit civilians

The latest strike highlights the continuing civilian toll of the war between Russia and Ukraine.

Drone and missile attacks on cities and civilian areas have repeatedly caused casualties, infrastructure damage and displacement since the conflict escalated.

International concern remains high

Global leaders and humanitarian organisations have repeatedly called for protection of civilians and an end to attacks on residential zones.

The death of another child has intensified grief and anger in the region.
