A six-month-old Japanese macaque named Punch has become an unlikely global sensation after being abandoned by his mother, drawing emotional reactions online and long queues at a local zoo.
Punch is currently under care at Ichikawa City Zoo near Tokyo. The infant monkey gained widespread attention after videos showed him clinging tightly to zookeepers and dragging a stuffed toy around his enclosure.
Viral video sparks emotional response
The footage, widely shared on Instagram and other platforms, captured the baby macaque seeking comfort and warmth from caregivers. Viewers described the visuals as both heartwarming and heartbreaking, reflecting the vulnerability of the young animal.
Zoo officials confirmed that Punch was separated from his mother and has since been receiving close attention from staff. Caretakers have been ensuring his health, safety and gradual emotional adjustment.
Visitors queue to see Punch
Following the viral posts, dozens of visitors lined up outside the zoo to see Punch in person. Many said they travelled after learning about him on social media.
Officials stated that Punch is slowly being introduced to other monkeys as part of a careful rehabilitation process. Japanese macaques, also known as snow monkeys, are highly social animals, and integration into a group is considered crucial for their development.
While the young monkey’s future will depend on his adaptation, Punch’s story has become a symbol of resilience and compassion. For now, he continues to charm visitors — a small life reminding many of the power of care, connection and quiet hope.
